I really, really, really hate it when people from the United States call themselves Americans (and only refer to people in the US). Americans are the people from the entire continent of America, which includes Canada, Mexico, Cuba, Brazil, Argentina, Peru, Honduras, Guatemala, Republica Domincana, Puerto Rico, El Salvador, United States and the rest of the countries on this continent.

It pisses me off when people say that I'm not an American, I'm a just a Mexican. What the hell? Do you know the name of the continent Mexico is on? It's called America, buddy; which means that I'm also an American. It's really weird... it works for other continents; European, African, Oceanic and Asian.

What's your point of view?

Well obviously, they could/should consider themselves as 'Americans',
But there's still the Northern and Southern divisions, no?

The sub-divisions (Country names) were given to identify people as well.
Shouldn't you get to choose how you represent yourself?
Most people tend to focus more on their country, than the continent as a whole.

Its really their personal preference.

That's why I call them "États-Uniens"(The country is called États-Unis in French)

I usually don't look at where the person comes from as an important thing anyway...

I love how USA is seen as an ethnicity by some. I call them Americans, because there is no better term. It is all words.

I consider myself an "American" I guess it just has to do with the way we're all raised... Do you really want to recieve the name of "American" loose... i mean.. there's soooo many people out there that think very poorly and even want to hurt "Americans".

As for me.. I feel the need to move to canada and try to come off as a candian.. :] no one wants to hurt them.

and from as far back as i can remember, the peoples name has come from the the country they live in. American is a culture, not a race.

United States of America = American
Canada = Canadian
Cuba = Cuban
France = French
Brazil = Brazillian (sp?)
Ecuador = Ecuadorian

So i can totally tell where people would get the term "Mexican" from...

It's really not that big of a deal for me *shrugs*

Thing is, there's nothing else to call Americans but Americans...

What are we to call ourselves - United Stateans?

Haha, that'd work out well.

Sure there is. US citizens.

I like the spanish (language, not country) method of categorizing. Just the name of the country and a prefix. I've forgotten what it is for the states.

When I was smaller I read a book that I really enjoyed called Bloomability. The kids in it were at a school in Switzerland and they argued about this tongue.gif

Every country has problems. We have a failing economy, failing wars, failing social structure. You club baby seals.

For the United States, it's "Estado Unidenses".

That's not a problem. I f people wouldn't buy something made of seals, we wouldn't hunt them. It's people buying it that have the power.

No freedom of speech? That would mean stuff like, no democracy, no right of different opinions?

That's one of the worst problem a country can have, in my opinion o.o

Have your parents ever made you do something, going to school would be a good example, that you would not do by yourself? I'm sure there are many examples, and some of them you would say have been beneficial to you. A Fascist government operates in the same fashion.
If someone knows what is good for you, and you don't wish to do it, you should be made to do it. You can take the government-supplied drugs if you feel unhappy.
