and for random expressions, I like "balls to the wall" and "the whole 9 yards"
-- and the first one is not dirty at all, (it comes from the days of diesel-powered submarines and their variable clutch mechanisms... balls to the wall meant they were running at very high revolutions... there were little lead balls on the end of pinions and as the RPMs went up, the weights would cause the pinions to expand and the friction between the engine and the screws would increase so more traction would be given to the screws).
